My mother told me that God would always be my closest friend in life. In February 1998 she passed away. Remembering those words, I wrote this poem several months later. Mom has gone to be with her friend.

This poem originally was published in Sad Poems - Poems about Death

God Was Your Closest Friend
I knew you were hurting although you wouldn’t cry,
And could see you were suffering, see the pain in your eye
I wanted to comfort you, to hold you, be with you that day,
You looked so helpless and frail while in bed you did lay.

I watched as you shivered from a new pain,
And wondered how I might have handled the same.
I wanted to scream, to shout, and to yell,
You said you were fine although your skin was so pale.

I knew in my heart your time was near end,
And wished I could take you, your body to mend.
I knew that soon God would be your closest friend,
You told me many times that’s how it would end.

I stood there watching as each breath came slow,
And fought to find courage, my emotions were low.
I promised you when the time came that I’d not cry,
You never saw my eyes wet, always they were dry.

I held your hand as I silently said goodbye,
And knew in my heart that soon you would die.
I stroked your forehead and said how I loved you,
You nodded and smiled and I knew that you knew.

I no longer care, my tears I can’t hide,
And as I stood there waiting for death by your side.
I knew then that God was your closest friend,
You had told me many times that’s how it would end.

I lost my mom on February 1, 2007 and my daddy on May 14, 2007. This poem touched my heart so much. The loose of a parent is so hard. My heart still hurts everyday. I wish you the very best. Your mother and my parents are now in heaven, and no pain.

Very touching. My husband's grandma died about year ago. She was home with all her children and almost all her grand and great grand kids. Her child knew it was time for her to go. This poem tells what i could see in their faces as she had to leave. God was her closest friend.

This poem really says it all about death. When all is said and done the answer the poem gives about death is the only satisfactory, only truly satisfying and sensible one potentially possible. Truth is beauty, beauty truth a poet once said. Since this poem gives the only beautiful answer to death possible, it is a poem about truth, about fact. If the God of perfect Love exists everything makes sense. If HE doesn't nothing makes sense. A God of Love would not permit us to never again be reunited with someone we have loved so much.

This poem brought sadness to me because just over two years ago I almost lost my mother. she was burned in a grease fire. I remember standing beside her in her room. it was almost to much to bare. She looked so different. i was with her when she was hurt and saw such a horrible sight. You can't imagine the happiness I felt when I found out she would be okay. this poem ment a lot to me because, to a degree, I can relate.

This poem is indeed the most beautiful poem I have read. I did the very things descibed in this poem only 5 months ago while watching my mother, Mary die. She was only 51 and died from renal failure. After watching her health deteriorate for 4 years, she couldn't take no more. as I stood by her bed and cared for her, stroked her forhead and told her how much I loved her, she nodded and knew. I miss her so much. I am 35 not much younger than her. The pain that I feel inside is so hard to explain but I want to share this poem with my family. Thank you so much! A year ago i lost my dad. This poem reminds me of the last week he was alive. the pain and agony he suffered, alone, he fought hard to hide his pain. He wanted no teaers shed or no expression of saddness. He expected all his family to be happy and alive, joyous when around him. Thank you for this. Tomorrow, Oct. 10th is his birthday. What an awesome way to celebrate his life with us

Poetry like this is the greatest. keep up the good work!

This was a touching poem to me, who also lost someone I loved, though under different circumstances. It gave me hope and a positive outlook on what has been, and I just hope that this gets publicized better so that it can help bring peace to many other troubled hearts. As I read this peom it brings back to the last day with my bestfriend, she had called to see if I could come over by myself and if my mother inlaw could watch my two boys. We laid together in her bed two days before she past as if she knew it was her time to go and for us to have that one last day together just the two of us. she seen me and my boys maybe five days earlier and had a great day with all tree of us, but I truly believe she knew it was her time to go and her body couldn't take no more so she asked for me to come alone. Like your poem said she didn't want me to cry or be upset and I held out for as long as I could but by the end of the night I couldn't hold it in plus had a felling that this was going to be our last time together. I call her house two days later to see how she was doing and she pasted away during the night. It has been two years and I still break down as if it was yesturday. I have a health condition myself and my boys say she is my angel and if I say were is Mary they will both say in our hearts. Your poems said says everything my mind and heart is thinking and I think it's amazing. Thank You Randall

  • Meg
That poem was soo sad but, it always brought back memories that in a way made me smile. My grandpa was very sick but he suffered through it slowly. He was such a happy, funny, and outgoing man, that nobody wanted to ever cry or be down around him. We were always by his side and each time we would go to see him, we just watched him fade away. This poem just kind of reminds me that it's okay for him. Like he's in heaven being the same happy man with God.

Just beautiful! However I did not see you in my mothers room six weeks ago when she died, but you could have been as the circumstances were the same. I was the oldest child, strong I had to be, no tears, it was expected of me. I held her hand over her heart as I felt it race, and suddenly there was stillness as she went to be with her friend. Her words to me as a child, I will never forget " Pray often, Never wait for tradgies to strike first". By reading your poem during these wee hours of the morning, I am finialy able to release. Thank you for writing it.

This really hits home. I lost my mom in April o3. There are so many things that I don't remember from the hospital to the wake & so on. Things happen for a reason and I just happen to stumble across this site. I could go on but, in the pass few weeks I've been having flash backs and why now it's almost 2 yrs. later. When reading this it was like a flood of memories and as much as I don't want to remember them & just leave things as they are I have alot of unfinished emotional crap to take care of. My mom is w/ her best friend who happens to be your mom's bestfriend too. Thank you for sharing it truly helped me i'm sure my therapist thanks you as well. Happy Easter! Kate

"For whom the soul belongs. " I created this quote when talking of death in reference to faith and God. I found your expression extremely beautiful and sympathetic. I think anyone who has dealt with the deity of death can relate to your words. For that I applaud you. I found myself reliving a moment I shall not forget anytime in the near future. Please keep sharing your works. Amidst the pen of creation, Jon Mesa, AZ

I was in search for a poem to read at our club, on the loss of one of our dear friends. I found this one. I decided to keep it for my self. I was so touched by this poem I remember when the time came to my mother 7 years ago. I couldn't express my feeling but cried. Had i known this poem that time, with the permission of the writer I would have recited it on the last day, during the funeral of my beloved mother. Still I will print out this one and give it to the son of our dear late friend Inge.

THIS POEM REALLY REMINDS ME OF MY FATHER WHO PASSED AWAY IN 1996,HE COULDN'T TALK HE WAS JUST SLEEPING AWAY,BUT HE WAITED UNTIL I ARRIVED FROM FLA. TO ROCHESTER,NY. AND VISITED HIM ONCE,I JUST RUBBED HIS FOREHEAD AND SAID IT WAS ALRIGHT. HE PASSED AWAY THAT SAME NIGHT,THAT'S HOW THIS POEM TOUCHED ME. THANKS FOR SHARING.
  • Emily
Very awesome poem. I read it for a school project. I got to share with people about how if a person knows Jesus as their Savior, they can have joy and hope in death. Eternal life is better than any life we can have here, and it sounds like your mom understood that. Being with Jesus is the best thing that can happen to a person!

We were really close. I was his little angel. I am still not over his death and I don't really think that I will ever be. I miss him so much. He was like a father to me. I keep telling myself that he is going to come back but I know that he can't. Deep down he is still with me.
