I live in a country, Guyana, dubbed "the land of six races," that has seldom been without conflict. Too often in my country, disputes have arisen, but fortunately we manage to come up with a solution.

Taking into consideration the present suppressed state of many nations in the world today, it is very difficult for anyone to remain oblivious forever. Though many of us never encountered any of these situations, it is imperative that each and every of us remember those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. This poem is not just for the countries currently in dispute, but for all people who are living lives far from what they are entitled - democracy that does no harm to another.

Here's to the day when the world will experience the peace and happiness we all crave and so deserve, which cannot be unless all of us make the effort. Consideration and compassion is part of being human, and it seems that recently many of us have lost our humanity.

Dreams Of Freedom
Sometimes I wonder what it is like to be free,
Like a monkey swinging from tree to tree,
Or like young eagles way in the skies,
Calling to each other with joyful cries.

Oh, to be free and without a care,
Not to live in bondage or constant fear.
To live each day and spread my wings,
To be forever untouched by negative things.

I'm a 49 year old mother who like to write down her thoughts. On juni 25 I have an poem event organised. The theme of this event isn't freedom, but still I'd like your poem and I will use this on that day. I hope you don't mind that I will mention your name.

Hi Everyone, Belinda (the author) here. Thanks for the many kind comments and votes of confidence. It has been a while since this poem and so much has changed in my life. I no longer reside in Guyana, however I often reflect on the country of my birth and wish the people there well. If any of you happen to pick up the December's issue of Canadian Time magazine, there is an interesting piece on People of the year. notably musician and singer Bono from the band U2. Now that is a guy who don't just talk the talk, but walk the walk. Here's to making the world a better place. one person at a time! Always, Belinda

This particular poem really touched me! My family and I live in Australia and even though we are finacially sruggling a bit, it has made me realize just how lucky I am. The people who live in countries with war right in front of their eyes are the ones who are the worst off in this world.

You do not have to live in an oppressed country to feel the need for freedom. I live in the US with a man I no longer love. I yearn for that freedom too.
