Friends do not always agree with us, and sometimes their differences of opinion help us to see the world in a different way, and thus they expand our horizons, and at times point out weaknesses that we must strengthen. I am half a century old now, and realize that it is important to have friends and to nuture those friendships. In this day and age it is so easy to retreat behind electonic devices where fingers type on keyboards, and eyes focus on cursors, or characters on TV. When in fact, our hearts need to touch and genuinely see and feel that which is in our friends' eyes. Thank you for your poem.

  I appreciate this poem for its ability to reach people & touch them on several different levels. Rich in meaning, each reader is left to ponder & learn from the old man and his dummy. At first, I was touched wih sympathy for the old man in his loneliness, but as I read on, I began to feel sympathy for the puppet, whose friendship was elicited only by manipulation, or the "pulling of strings. " This could be a poem about a manipulative old man who sought to control others. Thus in the end was left with only a wooden "puppet" for a friend. Or, I could also see it this way, how many of our friends are like puppets? Wooden, hollow, phony, they'll tell you anything you want to hear to your face, but behind your back they stab you. And this could also be a poem about phony, wooden friends who give you the nod only when prodded to do so. We all have experienced jealous friends, as well, who withhold approval and always have a biting comment to make. In the end, I could see the old man AND his "puppet" friend as villains, depending on who was pulling the others "strings. " Taken at face value without interpretation, it's a great poem about our common plight of loneliness in a world of people caught up in the rush of life, and in our lonely, sometimes desperate lives, reach out like in the movie where the UPS guy's plane crashes into the ocean & he washes up on shore. with a UPS package containing a basketball, which he scribbles a smiley face on and befriends, naming the ball "Wilson. " Wilson or a puppet, or a puppy if needs be. is a friend indeed to a friend in need! Great poetry! Lots to think about with this one!

Now a contented 60 something, I still see people of my own age behaving in the same way. What a waste! Claire Messud, the brilliant novelist, has written a wonderful short novel "The Hunters" about the same thing. I just wish I could have read "The Dummy" and the novel when I was a teenager!

  This poem touched me because it is so much like real life. Oftentimes, we make a friend, we hope to be accepted by them and be able to talk about anything. We are friends for a while, maybe even a long time, and then something happens. it could be anything, usually a silly reason that this argument breaks out, and then two people are in the miserable dark without a friend. This has happened to me so often that i truly wish that i wont have any more friends. If any person ever has any friend problems, i hope you come out of it okay. Just know that everybody has problems, all that you can do is forgive and forget what happened. Also, you should love your enemies as you should love anyone, EVERYONE needs someone to love them and care about them.

  I appreciate this poem for its ability to reach people & touch them on several different levels. Rich in meaning, each reader is left to ponder & learn from the old man and his dummy. At first, I was touched wih sympathy for the old man in his loneliness, but as I read on, I began to feel sympathy for the puppet, whose friendship was elicited only by manipulation, or the "pulling of strings. " This could be a poem about a manipulative old man who sought to control others. Thus in the end was left with only a wooden "puppet" for a friend. Or, I could also see it this way, how many of our friends are like puppets? Wooden, hollow, phony, they'll tell you anything you want to hear to your face, but behind your back they stab you. And this could also be a poem about phony, wooden friends who give you the nod only when prodded to do so. We all have experienced jealous friends, as well, who withhold approval and always have a biting comment to make. In the end, I could see the old man AND his "puppet" friend as villains, depending on who was pulling the others "strings. " Taken at face value without interpretation, it's a great poem about our common plight of loneliness in a world of people caught up in the rush of life, and in our lonely, sometimes desperate lives, reach out like in the movie where the UPS guy's plane crashes into the ocean & he washes up on shore. with a UPS package containing a basketball, which he scribbles a smiley face on and befriends, naming the ball "Wilson. " Wilson or a puppet, or a puppy if needs be. is a friend indeed to a friend in need! Great poetry! Lots to think about with this one!
