I wrote this poem one day when I felt like my parents and my friends were trying to run my life.

This poem originally was published in Poems on Life - Teen Poems about Life

Trash
You're throwing it away, you're wasting your life.

You're too young to know what decisions to make.
You're too stupid to know what opportunities to take.

You're just a teenager, too rebellious and wild to think.
You're on the brink of falling over the edge.
Don't take a step too far, be cautious,
right now you're on the ledge.

I'm just trying to help, so don't raise your voice.
It's not your choice anymore.
You must do as I say, you can't have it your way.

You don't know what you want.
You can't have what you hunt.

You can't have your own dreams, you have mine.

I couldn't live my life to the fullest,
so I'm going to make yours the dullest.

Don't waste your life or throw it away
because you're living it for me, my way.

I love this poem! It sounds exactly like what I've been going through. Life as a teen is so hard when you have people who want you to live out your life the way they would have lived theirs. It's sad to know that they won't let you live the way you want.
  • katie

Ah to be young again. to think that your decisions are the best anyone could make and to believe that only your friends can see things like you. Eventually you will grow older and see beyond your noses and realize that you will continue to grow and learn more about life. In your 20's you will look at your younger years as the years when you were barely coming out of your shell. and if you pay attention, you will notice that we never have all the answers and you might learn to appreciate what it is to live life without the influx of hormones that blind your emotional decisions. Wisdom comes with age. "When I cannot find my ignorance, I have lost my wisdom. "
  • Ellen
You know, I have read alot of these and this is the only one so far the i reallly wanted to comment on! I dont know how old you are or were when you wrote that but it's great! I wish its was longer and more described! But Yea! That's a part of growing up. Your parents try to live their lives threw the kids! It's hard and for anyone else that is going threw it. Wait it out and speak your mind. It will pass.
  • MAYELINE

Well, i LOVED that poem. i'm a 13 year old girl, i live in Dallas, Texas. and i TOTALLY feel that way with my parent. like they just DON'T understand. although they always SEEM to b right. that's what bugs me. but the reason they'r alway right is cuz they've been there. they were teenagers JUST like us. so we got to understand it. well anyway. i LOVE ur poem.
  • Chanai
This poem shows exactly how so many teens feel! And its so true your parents tell you not to raise your voice or give you attitude but half the time you dont even know you are doing it!
  • Char
Ok! yeah that is tottaly how i feel with my parents. I hat it, they tell me i'm old enough to make my own decitions but they still make them all for me. It drives me crazy. I cant take it when they do that to me, it's like life is one big contradiction.
  • kk

Direct and to the point. But as a parent myself, we're trying to protect you best we can till you get out on your own. Look at the bright side of things, and realize your parents love you. Smile!

  • Cassie
I agree, people dont think that teens can make decisions, and if there rong its like i told you so well how do you think you get better, you learn from your mistakes . theres no such thing as perfect in this world. GREAT POEM!
  • Sara Beth
I Love This Poem. I Always Feel As If I Do What I Want To My Parents Will Say No Because They Could Never Do It. I Hate When They Do It Sooo Much! And Have You Noticed That Whenever You Try To Say Something So Nice And Want A Nice Answer Back They Yell At You And In Order To Let Them Know That You Didn't Mean It They Yell At You For Raising Your Voice? And When The Fight Or Arguement Is Over Its Always The Kid's Fault?!?! Or Whatever You Do Is Never Good Enough? I Give This Poem A 5+!
  • Natalie
I like this poem because it is true about how others always choose things for you as a teenager. You don't get to choose where you live (until old enough to leave home), how much money you get, how late you can stay out, when your old enough to think for yourself.
  • rai
diz poem touch me a lot it describes my self!
  • Naomi
Thank you very much for writing this poem. It expressed fully how I feel every day.
  • Elizabeth
wow this poem is awesome its exactly how every teenager feels about their parents. i personally have felt this way many times they say they trust you to make the right decision but as soon as you have the decision to make they make it for you or take away your chance of making the decision.
