I was inspired to write this poem from the many news stories I have seen and read about young people who have recklessly thrown their lives away by drinking and driving, or by driving with someone who is intoxicated.

We have all seen the scenario of parents attending the funerals of their children, yet the problem continues all over the United States. I do not wish to single out any certain age group, as drinking and driving and fatal accidents have been caused by many an adult. All age groups are affected. However, it disturbs me that, with graduation and prom season approaching, our nation's youth will be attending parties where alcohol is being served. I wrote this in hopes young people will realize they are not invincible and that bad things don't always happen to the other guy; because sometimes the other guy is them!

This poem originally was published in Sad Poems

The Final Act
Screeching tires, shattering glass,
twisting metal, fiberglass.
The scene is set it all goes black,
The curtain raised the final act.
Sirens raging in the night,
sounds of horror, gasps of fright.
Intense pain, the smell of blood
tearing eyes begin to flood.
They pull out our bodies one by one,
What is going on, we were only having fun!
One of my friends is missing, what did I do?
Her scattered belongings everywhere,
in the road there lies her shoe.
A man is leaning over me and looking in my eyes,
"What were you thinking, son"?
"Did you really think that you could drive?"
He pulled up the sheet still looking in my eyes,
"If you'd only called your Mom or Dad, you'd still be alive!"
I started to scream, I started to yell;
But no one could hear me, no one could tell.
They put me in an ambulance; they took me away.
The doctor at the hospital exclaimed, "DOA!"
My father's in shock, my mother in tears,
she collapses in grief, overcome by the fear.
They take me to this house and place me in this box.
I keep asking what is happening,
But I cant make it stop.
Everyone is crying, my family is so sad.
I wish someone would answer me,
I'm starting to get mad.
My mother leans over me and kisses me good-bye,
My father pulling her away, she is screaming, "WHY"?
They lower my body into a dirt grave,
It feels so very cold, I yell to be saved.
Then I see an angel; I begin to cry.
Can you tell me what is happening?
she replies "YOU DIED."
I can't be dead; I'm still so young!
I want to do so many things - like sing, and dance, and run.
What about college or graduation day?
what about a wedding? Please - I want to stay.
The angel looked upon me, and with a saddened voice,
"It didn't have to end like this; you knew you had a choice."
"I'm sorry it's too late now; time I can't turn back."
"Your life is finished; that, my son, is a fact!"
Why did this happen? I didn't want to die!
The angel, she embraced me and with her words she sighed,
"Son, this is the consequence you paid to drink and drive.
I wish you made a better choice, If you did you would be alive.
It doesn't matter if you beg me, or plead on bended knee, There is
nothing I can do, you have to come with me."
Looking down at my family, I said my last good-bye.
"I'm sorry I disappointed you, Dad.
Mommy, please don't cry,
I didn't mean to hurt you, or cause you any pain.
I'm sorry all you're left with is a grave that bears my name.
I'm sorry all your dreams for me have all been ripped away;
the plans for my future all gathered in a grave.
It was such a stupid thing I did, I wish I could take it back;
But the curtain is being lowered.

this poem touched me in many ways. im a 13yr old gurl and have had many times where a friend would say "just try it" i kno im better than that and everytime i said no. it makes me think of how many teens just like me would throw everything away for just a cople minutes of fun while they drink. it hurts to kno how many ppl have died over the stupid choice of drinking and driving. and how a lot of ppl just dont care. that poem toughed me in ways i cant explain. it makes u think. something a lot of ppl forget to do sometimes
  • marlene

i loved your poem, the way you put the words together makes it intresting. i my self write poems ive been trying to figure out how to post them up but i just dont know how. any way, i like how you took the persons point of veiw and let people know how it felt for the driver to die. most people don't think about that. its sorta scary to imagine what a dead person would think or evan if they can think. over all i just really loved your poem. your a great writter im looking forward to reading some more of your poems.
  • Jen
This poem needs to be sent to the entire world and let the words out to help and keep other children or even adults from drinking and driving!Wow Lisa Teller has complete talent. This touched my heart and will touch all if you let it. It was my pleasure to have read something so wonderful.
  • alyssa
Great job! i think the poem u did was like telling a story. I believe that every teen shouldn't drink and drive because they know that it is wrong. But, they decide to do it anyway. There is alot of news on t. v. everyday or in the newspaper that a teen or teenagers died in a car accident because of drinking and driving. In my opinion i think drinking and driving is ridiculous. But, anyways u did great.
  • Phyllis
i have a son who is the military, and i heard that he does drink and i can only hope & pray that he does not drink and drive. when i read this poem, i began to cry. my son is 21 years old, he is married and has three beautiful babies. right now his wife and babies are staying with me. i always tried my best to raise my children in church and teach them the ways of god. i hear on the news about teenagers dying in car accidents, some of whom went to school with my son. my heart bleeds for the parents who have to deal with this tragedy. this poem really touched my heart.
  • Colt

My mom, dad, sister Anna and brother Pip died in a car crash with another car whose driver was twice over the limit. I was only 14 when that happened but the memories from it are still so clear in my mind at 16. Your poem has captured the emotion of the scenario and I just want my family back. I have to go on now without my whole family. This has affected me in the worst way possible don't let it affect you too. Don't drink and drive please.

I first read this poem in chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff and I am actually writing a poem on drugs and alcohol right now for my english class. Hopefully I'll get an A! But really this poem really does seem like it's coming from an actual person in this situation. It's very emotional and realistic. Hopefully when people read this poem it will give them a better idea of the reality of drinking and driving. Thank you for writing this poem.
  • Kathrine

  • Brendan
A vote? Well, if the ballot has "Damn good", "well-made", or "incredible", then I'll pick those.
  • Melody
Wonderfully written poem with such a strong message! My son was killed by a drunk driver in a truck wreck. The driver did receive some jail time, but most importantly he got a lifetime license suspension. One less drunk driver on the road to spare another family the pain and sorrow we will always have to live with. Our son also left a brother and 3 month old daughter, besides two loving parents. It's so tragic, but alot of families understand what this poem means to them. God Bless! Missing our beloved Adam!

Wonderful, touching #1. I am a Fire Chief, I recently started a program in our area called ESADD,Emergency Services Against Drinking & Driving. It hits home for me, back in 1994 my mom was killed by an underage drunk driver. My mom was 76 & had fought breat cancer for 6 years & BEAT IT! Part of our Christmas present that year. Then in Jan,16 she died helping others,so she could get back home to go to church. 2 years later my neice a mother of 3 toddlers, killed by an underage drunk driver. This poem is great, words can't explane the emotion it brings. Thanks to the author.
  • Renee

One life lost is more than enough to make you view an issue differently. My entire family along with many of our friends took a devasting blow to the heart when our dearest friend got behind the wheel of a car drunk. He died on impact, and our lives have not been the same since then.
  • Jessica
This poem was really good, i lost 2 of my best friends in a car accident from drunk driving. everybody needs to realize that u r not always safe when u drink and drive and that there is a chance that u could die. Maybe if everybody looks at the consequences than this world would be a better place.

It made so much sense and if only people would listen to some of these things that happen and pay attention then maybe their lives would be saved. It's really sad that people drink and dirve and this poem made so much sense and it was an awesome poem!

This is a great poem. i used it for my school poetry paper. we had to choose our favorite poems and read them in front of the class. I chose this one of coarse. Thank you so much for writing this. It is so great.
  • Sophi
This poem was incredibly poignant and touched my heart. We sometimes forget that one mindless act can have such an impact on the lives of others we know and love. We become so wrapped up in our own affairs and fail to think of the consequences of our actions. In some cases, it may be too late.
  • dawn
this poem is one of the best i have read i cried it touched me deep down inside
  • Jennifer
I was browsing the poems looking for a "IM sorry poem" and came across this one, This one really touched me and it is so very true, being hit by a drunk driver and having a friend/relative hit by a drunk drive I really thought that this poem needs to be out there, hanging in every bar, in every school to let people realize what happens when they get behind the wheel.

  • Vicki
This poem is great! My best friend was killed by a drunk driver when we were just 16. The older guy, that hit her and a friend, was in his fifties, and drank to much beer. I feel it should have been him instead of her. He had lived a full life, hers only starting, she never got to see prom, graduation and more. I am now 30, that's been almost 15 years. Even though she wasn't physically at my wedding, there she was,(in a heart shaped locket given to me just minutes before the wedding by her Mom)going down the aisle with me and the tears were there. Then, on Oct 12,1994 my beautiful daughter was born as the tears fell from the holes in Heaven. She was there again, as I always knew she'd be. We were so close, what do friends do, when the other you love is taken from you? I hope lots of people will read this poem and realize what can happen when you drink and drive! Thanks for this poem it has touched me deeply.
  • Lori

Wow. The imagry in this poem is astounding. I was in a serious car accident a few months ago and I still have back problems but I'm lucky to be alive. I was with a friend (neither of us were drunk) and our SUV flipped over twice before landing in a ditch and I know what it's like to be in a serious accident, how much worse it could have been if she (my friend driving) or the other lady had been drunk. Great job on the poem though!

This poem denotes the real seriousness of drinking and driving. some people don't realize until it's too late just how serious it is. THis should be a good wake up call for some, since it's not something that you ussually get a second chance

This poem touched me. I knew a few people that lost their lives because of this. Unfortunately, there are still people, some that I know, some that I don't, that still insist on driving while intoxicated. Never when I am around, because I refuse to let them, and I preach to the ones that do when I am not there. I sent this to a friend in hopes that it would wake him up a little. Thank you for hitting home.
  • Ina
"Bravo" my brother Felipe Sosa Jr. was hit by a drunk driver January 14, 1989 and left in a coma until this day... If he will "ever" wake up... who knows when... it's all I have to say since it didn't stop anyone from drinking and driving, it's as if our voices are dead.
  • Sue
Being a nurse that has worked in emergency...seeing this in real life..this should be matted and framed and given to each person, required to be memorized as part of the driving test.
  • Kitti
It was so sad, I cried like a baby.
  • rhiannon

The day that they start driving or riding with their friends, I will be giving this to them to read. I hope and pray that they will find it as powerful as I did. Thank you and I hope you got through to some of the kids out there.

  • S

  • Elizabeth
This poem comes from an amazing view point. I have never before read a poem about drunk driving from the drunk driver's view point. especially a young, teenage drunk driver. I have always seen the poems from the victim's view point, or the rescuer's view point. This was really good.
  • Nicole
i think this is a very good poem and the author has alot of talent. These kind of poems mean alot to teenagers like myself.
